Cheryl Haas, a JCGL volunteer, has made digital images of
deed indexes at the Jackson County Courthouse for the years 1853 - 1899. These images are
available for your perusal at the Library. Our volunteers have transcribed these indexes for inclusion on our web site. The indexes are
alphabetized both by the grantor's last name (left side of table) and by the grantee's
last name (right side of table). Occasionally one listing includes different information than the other listing, such as spelling or the spouse's name, so both indexes should be checked.
The term grantor refers to the individual(s) giving over the property and the term grantee refers to the individual(s) receiving the property. The Latin phrase et ux means and wife and the Latin phrase et al. means and others. If the year is followed by a number in parentheses, it is the number of deeds transferred between those two parties in that same year. If you find a name of interest to you and would like a copy of the actual courthouse deed containing the reference, fill out a request form and mail it to us along with a check for $15 and a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Be sure to include the grantor's name, the grantee's name, and the year. There is a link to the request form at the top of each index. Up to four additional deed copies can be requested at one time for the reduced rate of $5 per each additional deed. Follow this link, Sample Deed, to see the deed of George Briggs. A separate office at the County Courthouse offers maps showing the exact location of the property referenced in a deed. If you would also like a copy of the map, there is an additional cost of $15. As for deeds, additional maps requested at the same time can be obtained for the reduced cost of $5 each. The map shown to the right is that for the sample deed. |
